The novel "Shattered" takes place in an urban city in present time. Its story full of drama and real-life situations that have or had happen to everyone. It all starts off with the introduction of a teenage girl named "Darcy" which is the main character. She talks about how worried she is to go to school because its the first day back from summer vacation. She worries about seeing her Ex-boyfriend (Hakeem) that she has not seen since summer vacation started. Many things happened during the summer that changed her and changed how she felt about everything, including Hakeem.
What happened during the summer haunted Darcy 24/7. Hakeem had moved due to family problems, she later had met an older guy named Brian and fell for him. He forced her to do things that she did not want to do and abused her. She did not tell anyone about this due to her being frightened about it. On the last week of summer vacation, the situation that was occurring in Hakeem`s family was over and he had moved back. Darcy found out he was back and was nervous to meet him knowing what had happened during the summer with Brian.
When she went to school to meet Hakeem, it was awkward. Her best friend "Tarah" was there with her boyfriend "Cooper" which was Hakeem`s best friend as well. They were all trying to start a conversation but the awkwardness took over. When Darcy got home, she saw her mother struggling with bills, while fighting with her father. Darcy`s sister (Jamee) was crying because she was scared dad was going to leave them again to be a drunk, with all that was happening at school, and everything at home, it all added up to a horrible life for her. Later on in the novel, the climax starts to rise as Darcy finds out that Hakeem still has feelings for her but he also had a secret about what he did in the summer.
I recommend this story to every teenager that likes a novel with drama, action, and suspense. There are many situations in this novel that everyone can relate to. In point in time, everyone has problems with their friends or family and feel that their life is horrible and they shouldn`t live no more. But this story shows you to push forward in life and if you try to make things better, everything will turn out to be alright.
